Flooring visualisers help you choose your next carpet

During the coronavirus lockdown, carpet shops may be closed, but online visualiser tools let you see how different carpets will look in your home.

Flooring visualiser technology means that you do not have to leave your home to choose a new carpet in North Wales, or anywhere else. You take a room picture with your phone or camera and upload it to the visualiser system. You then choose a style, pattern and colour of the carpet and you will see a modified room image of how it will look with the selected carpet.

Many people decorate their rooms before laying a new carpet. Some visualisers will let you change the colour of the walls so that you can see how carpets go with various colour schemes.

Other visualizers let you change the floor material to wood, laminate or vinyl, as well as carpets. Whether you want a luxury pile wool carpet or a natural hardwood floor, visualiser technology shows you how each type of flooring and floor design looks in your room. You can even rotate the floor pattern to see how orientating a floor covering in different ways affects the look of the room.

You can print the images of how your rooms will look with new carpets. Some suppliers will send you swatches of carpets delivered to your home so that you can look at them in your room.

Being confined to your home is not ideal, but a good way to use the time is to plan room renovations for when restrictions are lifted.

Dramatic advert highlights dirt hidden in nation’s carpets

Cleaning brand Vanish has a new television advertising campaign designed to shock people into being aware of how dirty their carpets really are.

The 30-second ad depicts a carpet being vacuumed to reveal an apparently clean carpet. Then, several builders pushing a cement-filled wheelbarrow chase a dog over the carpet. They are followed by commuters on their way to work, a crowd of noisy football supporters, a group of cyclists and finally a flock of pigeons.

Vanish is used to remove all the dirt trampled into the room from this onslaught. The dramatic message of the advert is that vacuuming alone does not remove all the dirt in a carpet.

Rose May Bird Smith of Havas, the creative agency that made the TV advert, said:

“If people knew how dirty their carpet really was, and all the filthy fibres it was harbouring, they might be persuaded to do something about it. It’s great to bring a burst of energy, humour and irreverence to what is typically quite a hardworking, functional category.”

Of course, Vanish is not the only cleaning product that can clean carpets, and there are many rival brands of carpet cleaning solutions.

Households in lockdown with carpets in the Chester, Wrexham and North Wales regions are advised to vacuum them each day, and regularly clean them with a carpet cleaning product.

After the lockdown has been lifted, it will be a good time to have carpets professionally cleaned, or hire a carpet cleaning machine.

Top five benefits of using carpets in offices

There are several reasons why carpets in Chester offices make for a good flooring choice.

Interior design has a large effect on staff productivity. Many employees spend more time at work than at home, so the office floor covering should be supportive and functional.

These are the top five reasons to go for carpet:

1. Looks

Hard floors such as wood and vinyl look good, but there is far more choice in carpet patterns and styles.

Neutral colours and carpets without patterns complement a minimalist decor style. Light colours create the illusion that a small space is larger, while loud colours and patterns suit a young creative or media company that has a vibrant image.

Contrasting colour carpet tiles can create pathways that direct visitors to reception areas or waiting rooms.

2. Health and safety

There is less risk of injury when falling on carpets than hard surface floors.

Carpets can trap allergens and dust particles, preventing them from being present in the air. This improves the air quality for allergy sufferers.

3. Thermal properties

A carpet with an underlay helps insulate rooms and save energy, particularly with wool carpets.

4. Acoustics

In offices, people talk on the phone, hold meetings with colleagues and tap keyboards all day, creating a somewhat noisy environment. Hard floors create echoes and reflect sound, whereas carpets absorb it, making the office quieter and less distracting to work in.

5. Making a good impression

Finally, remember that the office appearance is part of a business image. A quality, well-designed carpet enhances the impression visitors get of a business.

Carpet manufacturer calls for “more intelligent” industry processes

Companies in the carpet sector have been advised to be “more intelligent” and flexible during the coronavirus crisis, says a leading name in the industry.

Victoria Carpets has said that carpets companies can only survive if they operate intelligently to adapt to changing conditions. Its management team has voluntarily reduced their salaries by 20%. The company reports that it is strong financially, but is reducing costs because of expected revenue decreases.

The Worcestershire company has been around for 125 years and takes a long-term approach to business planning. It has strategies for when the worst of the crisis is over, and is ready to respond quickly to renewed demand for carpets. Noting that it has survived two World Wars and financial recessions, the company says it is determined to survive this viral pandemic.

Politician Ann Widdecombe has also called for more business flexibility. According to the Daily Express, she ordered a carpet from a local supplier who called to say that they were closed and could not take delivery of the carpet they had ordered for her from the manufacturer. The manufacturer was willing to deliver the carpet, but only to the closed carpet supplier and not to her home, which they classified as a private address.

Widdecombe called for businesses that are still operating to be more flexible and “tear up their rulebooks.”

A new carpet for your Chester home may not be available because it is not an “essential” purchase. Once the crisis is over, carpet manufactures that have survived will restart their production lines to meet the rise in demand.

What is the best flooring for a commercial office?

There are many flooring options for commercial offices. You need to consider a number of factors when deciding on the best for a particular office location.

The main choices are carpets, vinyl, laminates and hardwood. There are pros and cons of each flooring type.

Are carpets a good idea?

Carpets and carpet tiles have noise insulation properties, so are ideal if you want a quieter office. Good quality carpets will last a long time, but they can stain easily. There are treated stain-resistant carpets, however.

Many offices have areas with more footfall than others. For example, if people walk through the office to another room, the carpet will no doubt become more worn along the path people take. If there is a wall-to-wall carpet, the whole carpet may need replacing if a section is worn. With carpet tiles, you only need to replace the worn ones.

Carpets come in a variety of patterns and colours and can match the office decor style. New types of carpet tiles contain a high content of recycled materials that makes them more environmentally friendly. As stricter green building regulations come into force, companies need to make work environments greener.

Only buy good quality carpet tiles that are stable enough to retain their shape, strong, in colours that don’t fade and easy to clean.

What are the advantages of vinyl?

Vinyl comes in sheets or tiles known as luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). The main advantage of vinyl is that it is long-lasting, particularly top quality LVT. This makes it suitable for very busy offices with heavy footfall.

Vinyl resists scratches and dents. It is hygienic, as vinyl does not trap dust. It is easy to clean and requires little maintenance. Vinyl is available in a wide variety of shades and designs.

For added eco-credentials, some vinyl manufactures include recycled materials in their products.

Is hardwood flooring a good idea?

Hardwood adds a touch of luxury to an office. Its style is timeless, and should not go out of fashion, plus it is easy to clean and will last a long time. Wood floors can be restored when worn by sanding and refinishing.

Wood is a natural product and is environmentally friendly, provided that the wood is sourced from sustainable forests. Planks can be made from reclaimed wood, and at the end of life, wood is easily recycled.

The main disadvantage of hardwood flooring is the cost, at least as an initial outlay. Engineered wood has a thin layer of real wood and is cheaper than solid wood. Wood lasts a long time, however, so the lifetime cost of this type of flooring may actually be good value.

Is laminate a good alternative to wood?

If you want the look of wood, without the cost, laminate is a good alternative. Modern printing technology makes laminate look very realistic. Compared to wood, laminate is easier and quicker to install, not to mention durable and easy to maintain.

What is the best office flooring?

All the flooring options listed above are suitable for office use. Some businesses go for a floor that is fast and easy to install, lasts a long time and is easy to keep clean and maintain. Vinyl and laminate floors are best if this is what you want. If acoustics are important, go for carpets or carpet tiles. The quiet luxury of a wool carpet adds comfort and style to an office.

If you want your office to be luxurious and add to the prestige of your company, then solid wood or engineered wood is a good choice.

What floor coverings last longest?

In offices that have a heavy footfall, durability is a factor when choosing the best floor coverings. Premium quality LVT often has a guarantee for many years, so you know it will last a long time.

A solid wood floor can survive for many decades, especially if it is periodically sanded.

Which floor is best for repairs?

Carpets and vinyl from rolls are not easy to repair, as whole sections will need replacing if damaged.

Wood can be repaired if scratched or dented, though this is a skilled job best done by professionals. Wood planks can be replaced, though this is not as easy as replacing laminate boards. Carpet and LVT tiles are easily replaced if sections are damaged or have excessive wear.

If installing laminate, carpet tiles or LVT in the office, buy extra tiles or planks that can be used to repair damaged areas.

Which floor coverings are best for recycling?

Floor coverings that have high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) are difficult to recycle for reusing the materials in them. Solid wood, on the other hand, is easy to recycle. There are carpet, vinyl and laminate recycling schemes that process floor coverings to reclaim some of the materials for future use.

What is the best low-cost flooring?

When looking for the best flooring for an office, don’t automatically go for the cheapest floor covering. The initial cost may be less but, because the floor is likely to need replacing more often, cheap flooring can end up costing more.

If you want the look of wood at less cost, laminate is a good choice. Engineered wood has a real wood surface and is not as expensive as solid wood.

If buying laminate, vinyl or LVT flooring, choose a good quality one to get better value for money.

What is the best floor for the staff?

The office environment affects the mood of workers. A well-designed office with good-looking desks, comfortable chairs and decorated in a bright modern style makes staff feel good about their working environment. Happy workers tend to be more productive.

Offices can be noisy. Acoustic ceiling tiles and carpets absorb sound and contribute to a quieter workplace.

As well as considering cost, durability and ease of maintenance, install a floor that the staff love. Consult architects and interior designers about their views on the best flooring that combines practicality with good looks. Take time to consider what you want from the office, what is best for the business and its staff.
